Meanwhile 5 people day are killed or seriously injured by cars, every day.

Good luck enforcing any "serious injury" caused by biking. Literally just a useless law that boils down to the government nagging you to drive a car.
Can't wait until these "small government" types want to force bicyclists to buy insurance.

The government said it had agreed to introduce new laws so those who kill or seriously injure people because of dangerous or careless cycling face the same penalties as drivers and motorcyclists.
I mean, it's hard to imagine it's a significant problem but if that's all they're doing then I mean that seems reasonable. They had to go back eight years to find someone killed by a cyclist, but I'm sure injuries happen fairly regularly.
I'm a cyclist, I regularly see fellow cyclists doing things that make pedestrians unsafe and that's bad. If the law is as incoherent wrt cyclists as the article claims I don't think passing a law like this is bad, even though there are some loonies they quote who are out to lunch.

On the surface, yes, and I'm not against punishment for people who ride their bikes like dicks, however I'd argue it's really not the same because most of the world is designed for cars first and foremost, for bicycles, not so much, and that makes the equivalency kind of hard to argue. Like how much do you, as a cyclist, have to expect someone to play crossing the street entirely be ear and step into your path, especially on things like MUPs or all the garbage infrastructure provided for cycling?

UK has been changing laws in the past few years so that bikes must be fully considered legitimate traffic by other drivers. It makes sense to increase the expectations on cyclists to actually act and have the same responsibilities as traffic too, rather than a weird hybrid. All of this is in lieu of just creating decent cycle infrastructure, which the UK is no longer capable of doing since it's a developing nation larping as an imperial power.
