It takes congressional impeachment to bring any consequences whatsoever, right? So basically it's impossible for them to suffer anything. Of course they're throwing the middle finger.
Thomas looks like he enjoys a good cheese hamberder or twelve, so that's pretty much the only thing that will stop him.
At this point, I'm assuming that that was actually counted as one of his qualifications - that back when they were vetting nominees, he got high marks in bribability.
Wait, wait, wait... How many bribes "gifts" are the other SCOTUS members getting? 'Cause I hadn't heard of any 'til now and naturally assumed it was ≈0!
See the thing is some of these could just be like very natural things that people have to register as gifts. Like if I had to register everything I did with my friends as gifts then maybe I'd have a non-zero sum of gifts, like my friends buy me lunch and sometimes they pick me up and drive me places. Now when your friends are millionaires that's bigger. And it seems a little bit more unreasonable. That being said, there's a difference between your friends having dinner with you and people blatantly giving you money under the table in so many ways
The government already has rules to quantify and account for that sort of thing in various contexts, such as this or (more strictly) this. Similar rules simply need to be imposed on SCOTUS.
I call bullshit, the others probably knew how to hide it better because there is a history with them. Also, none of the justices should be taking gifts.
Friendly reminder, 5 out of 9 SCOTUS seem to have taken bribes:
Sotomayor's book situation isn't a bribe, it is using her position unethically to sell books. It is wrong because it is for personal gain, but it is not taking money to do other people's bidding.
I absolutely agree with you, I thought it was a funny contrast when I added it. No one else has noticed. The worst she did was try and convince people to buy her book, lol.
"We want you to betray the people you swore an oath to protect." "What's in it for me?"
"Money, of course. First class golfing trips with all the bells and whistles. Plus the everlasting title of Uncle Tom among the peasants... I mean populace." "I'll take it."
"Good. As expected. We knew you were weak."
You have to think this is just the tip of the iceberg. With Thomas alone the number of times he's "forgotten" to include something thst we learned of later means you just have to assume there's so much more. What or how much who knows? But there is no way I believe Samuel Alito has accepted 170,000 dollars in gifts over the years. Not if his asshole buddy Thomas over here is bringing it at minimum 4 million.
