American pharmaceutical ads are weird. I guess I’m just not free enough to understand them?

- Canada is a bit on the weird side too. For us companies can either advertise what their drug does, or advertise their name, but not both.

I mean, here (in Germany) we have ads for meds too, but only for freely available stuff that you can reasonably self-medicate. Like ibuprofen and stuff

Warnings at the end of the ad: "do not take if you have, have had, or ever will have the sniffles, as the deaths of yourself and everyone you've ever loved will result"
Nah, I think I'll pass..
- Real one:
  "If you have mild to moderate rheumatoid arthritis, VIOXX may be able to treat your pain. Ask your doctor about VIOXX, he has all the facts about whether it's right for you."
  "Okay so yes, 140,000 people got severe heart disease and a bunch of them died of heart attacks, but in our defense, the only reason we deliberately mislead your doctor about the safety of VIOXX was so we could make a shitload of money".

America: Advertise drugs to people
- Oh they definitely advertise to doctors as well
- ...Aaaand then put them in prison for obtaining any similar molecule.

TV: "Ask your doctor about DRUG today!"
Me: "Shouldn't my doctor be the one telling me about DRUG? Cuz, like... He actually thinks I need it?"
Of course even that is not necessarily the best... If the doctor gets a kickback for pushing a certain drug, they're no better.
