Where do buy pants from and what kinds do you like

Fashionwise, I am basically this guy, but white girl. Can't be dysphoric about my hips if they are hidden under massive pants.

Honestly, I thrift 90% of my clothes. Older jeans and whatnot were made with better materials and construction, now you have to go to higher end brands that are extremely cost-prohibitive compared to thrifting. Plus, being more expensive doesn't correlate to higher quality inherently, you have to legitimately compare brands and even visually examine pieces, like are the seams messed up or uneven, are the rivets rusted, etc etc

I get whatever jeans look like they'll probably fit from goodwill. They closed their changing rooms at the one nearest my house so I err on the large side.

There’s used-cheap and new-cheap. Always avoid new-cheap.

Eddie Bauer, great fits, lovely fabric. I really like their 94% nylon 6% elastic fabric on their technical pants, super comfy, breathable, and durable.

Sturdy work cargo pants. Lasts a long time and has many pockets. Warm (which is bad here, very hot outside). Can be bad on sensitive skin, but you get more used to it. Less restrictive than most cuts of jeans.
A lot of Op shops here have lots of them.

mostly directly from levis ngl. relaxed or "relaxed straight" fit, ideally non-stretch, but the stretch ones can be more comfy sometimes. It's overpriced but I only ever seem to have a couple favored pairs at a time until they wear out, so the cost per year is still low (I have a wider variety of shorts in rotation in the summer, mainly thrifted, but winter is depression season).
This is because ordering on larger sites like ebay or amazon, or literally anywhere that isnt direct from a manufacturer, I not only have to struggle and often fail to find exactly what I want, not a similar looking thing that is actually a new style that doesn't fit me, but I also have to take the >50% chance what I ordered is going to be a cheap knockoff not the real thing. So at this point brands with a consistent product line, not new slight variations every 3-6 months win out for me, even if they are more expensive. I'd buy more in store but stores around here rarely carry my size.
- I also buy direct from Levis online because like, you my size isn't carried much in stores. I am a gym rat, so I have a somewhat slim waist, but thighs that are out of control. Luckily Levis makes a style called 541 that seems to be basically built for guys like me.

Thrift stores mainly, I learned a neat trick recently! Your neck is about half the circumference of your waist, so you can check wether a pair of pants will fit you by seeing if the waistband can envelop your neck. Here's a video
Anyway I like high-rise regular fit pants. Khakis, dress pants, jeans, whatever. As long as they feel like quality, which can be tricky to find because of the people usually running thrift stores being old ladies who pick clothes they themselves like, but it means when I do find something it's pretty cheap. Wish I knew some good online retailers for decent clothes at a fair price though.

I buy fat boy pants from goodwill for a couple bucks, then pay a couple more bucks to get them tailored by one of my neighbors.
I don't care if they're fashionable or not, but they fit my fat ass, and that's good enough for me.

I like Mavi jeans. I haven't done the work of finding any (new or vintage) that aren't elastic and still fit me in like a decade.
If you ever get high waisted jeans, make sure the zipper goes all the way down the in-seam. The fast fashion companies are making some with short zippers and it looks like trash and it visually implies you have a small penis.

I buy cheap blue jeans, usually from Amazon or Walmart. Wrangler has a sub-brand called Rustler that was on sale recently. Turns out they fit me really well, so bought a bunch. I doubt they'll last more than a couple of years, but I also have a bad habit of "accidentally" working on cars without changing into my work clothes. So my jeans are usually ruined by dirt & grease stains long before they actually wear out.

I like cheap pants. They fit my non-existing clothes budget better than expensive pants and they do the job of keeping me warm and decent just as well as expensive pants does.

When I have the money to spend I like well fitting bootcut jeans in deep black or faded blue. But I rarely have the money to spend.
I wear a lot of old clothes I thrifted years ago, with a standout being some super faded purple corduroy jeans that are now pretty torn up and would be better suited to use as rags but I like them anyway. They're well worn in, comfy as a motherfucker. I could blend in as fully houseless when I wear them with some of my other stuff. Somehow they make me feel like an old timey frontier dwelling dyke- I can't explain it really, something about their totally shapeless form while being perfectly fitted to my waist, plus the wear and tear, makes me feel like I'm living on pure grit and determination without a care for aesthetics. In a strangely inverted way, that provides its own aesthetic pleasure.
When I'm expecting to get busy, and I don't say this with pride, I wear some 5.11 tactical SWAT pants. They are expensive and have many pockets. The material isn't even especially rugged, but they breathe well and are extremely functional. Too functional even. The fuck am I going to do with a gun retention loop in my back pocket? lol. Just kidding, the street finds its own uses for things, that loop is a neat little feature. I fear being read as a cop or a fed when I put these on. I have a matching shirt too. I feel like I give off fascist vibes when I combine them, so mostly I don't.
The most expensive pair of pants are my real stand on business shit though- they're locally made motorcycle jeans, very rugged, reinforced with kevlar. When I combine those with an armoured motorbike jacket I am almost incapable of feeling fear. I've come off skateboards at high speed and slid across intersections in that getup, and just bounced right back with all my skin intact. That's my riot armour for real. I think I could take a bat to the back without much worry. The jeans have a slot for knee protection but I don't have armour for that since I wear hard shell outer knee pads if I'm doing shenanigans I am too old for.
When I'm feeling super queer and baller I've got another pair of thrifteds that are also a sort of purpleish red, with a like, I dunno, big cat print pattern on them. I end up with ancom colour coordination by happy accident quite often. Another pair were gifted to me by a partner's mother who just bought us pants that don't really fit so well because I lack serious hips or butt to fill them out. But they look sick, also have a big cat pattern, in shades of grey and black. I need a belt with those to really rely on them and they fit my calves properly while the top stays loose, it's an odd sort of sag. I dig em though. I make them look good regardless.
I also still have pants from the early 2000s from before I transitioned. I don't really wear them anymore but it's like they were designed for shoplifting and that's how I used to use them. The awkward shuffle walk when you've got 6 cans of paint in various parts of your pants is a funny skill to have retained as an adult but hey. Old habits die hard.
But what I'm wearing most of all? Cheap as shit sweatpants. If I can get away with sweats, yo I'm just going comfy mode. Unfortunately most of my sweatpants are worn in the ass and have holes torn in them from doing tricks with my dog. I still wear them but I gotta make sure I'm wearing full coverage underwear or it gets a lil sus looking lol.
OH. And I cannot forget my stretch "denim" jeans that are absolutely shredded, patched with pieces of old band shirts, stitched with wool and written on with paint pens. I guess that's a crust punk sorta look. They are a statement piece, real DIY vibes. But they expose a lot of skin (at this point) so I only like to wear them when it's cold and I can layer them with some leggings, since I so rarely groom leg hair anymore. My dysphoria keeps me from feeling "pride" in my leg hair but that's not enough to push me to keep them shits silky smooth. Almost all of my pants are worn baggy, but these are skin tight and sexy as fuck.
The best pants is no pants though. Dresses rock. Again tho it's a leg hair and self care dependent equation. The winter months are much more versatile for me.

I have exactly three pairs of pants. They are pretty durable because they're motorcycle pants, but they were also pretty expensive. Two are straight jeans, while the third is a pair of slacks that matches well with a button-up shirt for when I need to wear one of those.
But I also have a couple pairs of running shorts. I don't remember ever buying them, Christmas gifts maybe? Anyway they're my go to when it's a) hot out and b) I'm not riding my motorcycle. They're also really great to change into after a work day.
I have completely whittled my life down to these kinds of pant. All other pant types are unnecessary.

I basically always dress like I'm about to go hiking, so fashion isn't really a thing for me, but Carhartt makes ripstop cargo pants that I like a lot. They're usually about $60 new, but sometimes I find them in thrift stores (never in my size). Anyway, they're super durable and loose enough for me to work/hike in them and they don't give me a lot of sensory issues. They don't do the swishing sound a lot of cheaper options do. The fabric is breathable enough for the mild summers where I live and I wear a base layer underneath during the winter.
Cargo pockets are nearly a requirement for me. I can fit a lot of snacks, gloves, etc. All the buttons (snaps on the pockets) and zippers are well made, reinforced pockets to clip your knife or a tool, gusseted crotch.
I've had one pair for about 3 years now and they are a little worn/faded in spots, but no holes yet. Since then I've bought a few more pairs. The only negatives are you can't really wear them for office settings in some places (Pacific Northwest doesn't seem to care) and I think the pants make me look more like a cop

Uniqlo do some very comfortable joggers, I wear those all the time

  Online - I don't buy these kinds of items too frequently since they're expensive, but where I shop depends on what I want to get. I've purchased from retailers that specialize in this kind of stuff or direct from the manufacturers. The places that sell these kinds of things often ship international (often from Japan, I've bought from China, too) and are difficult to return, so they're really good with providing measurements for the waist/thigh/inseam/etc so you can easily compare to garments that you own at home.
  What do you mean by larger/oddly proportioned? Do you have a larger waist? If you have a pair of jeans at home that fit you well, I'd recommend starting with measuring those (different places can use different measurements, but here's an example https://www.denimio.com/en_US/sizing-guide.html).

  So most denim is sanforized, treated to reduce shrinking, and that includes most raw/selvedge denim. You have to go out of your way (and often pay more lol) to get something unsanforized. Even then, you'll find unsanforized denim that's been rinsed once to be preshrunk - I have a jacket that I bought unsanforized and rinsed, but I haven't jumped into the unsanforized rabbit hole yet. For those garments you have to add a bit of wiggle room on the sizing and hope for the best.
  The appeal to me is that it's just a much more interesting and enjoyable garment than a pair you buy at the mall (the quality is better, but some of the mall brands make some decent stuff, too). You can get some really pretty fabrics with the fancy brands, and they're built the same as classic work wear so they'll hold up pretty well. When you buy a raw denim garment, you'll see it age and change over time as you wear it.

  Normal person answer: Yeah, more or less. I've heard good things about those ones, so I hope you enjoy them!
  There's a lot of fuss about washing jeans, but what I do is: turn inside out, machine wash cold with low spin. Promptly remove and hang dry.
  Annoying person answer: "raw denim" and "selvedge denim" refer to two different things that often overlap.
  Selvedge denim refers to the self-finished edges on the fabric. It's a more expensive process, but weird nerds get excited about it. If you cuff the pants, you'll see the white finished ends of the fabric.
  Raw denim refers to the material being untreated and unwashed. They make non-selvedge raw denim (like this) but it's uncommon. Usually people who are into fancy denim enough to care about raw denim will want it to be selvedge.

I'm tall and skinny enough that I can consistently get pretty nice pants for 50-60 % off when internet clothing stores are trying to get rid of their last sizes, I don't know if that would also work for short sizes. Oh but if only I was just 2 inches thinner and somehow also 4 inches taller, I would be feasting. If someone here is an alien looking for jeans for their human suit, you could get them like 70-80 % off.

17 years ago I found a pair of black skinny jeans that showed my ass off really well and I've just been buying them since.

For winter I get velvet pants. They are a little more expensive but offer more insulation. I like good ol pants that don't hug every part of your legs. It looks bad on man. For summer linen. For other seasons plain cotton

Mostly thrifted but I have a few pairs of uniqlo chinos for the same reason you stated, that free alteration. I wear black or khaki chinos like 90% of the time, they’re flexible for casual and formal settings so it lets me keep my wardrobe small. Generally all straight cut, with some relaxed or slim fit. I like some room to breathe and don’t want the skinny fit stuff. I also have some dickies and other thicker pants in a similar style for hiking and outdoor work, and some sweatpants for working out. For a long time I had 4 pairs of pants total until I started thrifting. I went to a thrift shop in a college town and got two pairs of brand new pants for $4 each, I love it
