  • Another piccy from Nepal taken from slides that no one asked for:

    I'm pretty sure that's namche baazar or maybe tengboche and everest top left.

    First time seeing snow. Also remember buying a mars bar in namche for $5USD which hurt. Beers at the tea houses were like $0.50c at 4000m elevation lol. As a 13yr old it was great. I was blamed by the teachers on the trip for spearheading trips to tea houses. I was just following everyone else but they didn't believe me.

        We were told if we picked any / bought any we'd be sent home :(

  • Got 3.5 hours of sleep in the end. Got that weird dry-eye dry-throat feeling from not having slept enough... Note to self no motivation brew today after 12 noon.

    One of my faves, in this village one kid got so wasted he fell into the latrine on the way back from a tea house but it was so cold it was frozen solid. We were all wasted so pulling him out was an effort. His lucky day.

    This was in Kathmandu and probably the most confronting thing we saw. Funeral pyre.

  • ARGH. I give up, 3 hours of sleep really isn't enough to be able to force my brain to understand log transformations and regression curves all over again. I've taken hours to make some key amendments to other parts and make some notes... but once it hits 4pm I'm outta here. Try again tomorrow.

    Probably also gotta accept the hit of $10 and toss out that juicy salmon fillet I bought on Saturday evening and didn't get around to making for some stupid reason (too busy making prawn curry on Sunday... too busy being a trash goblin on Monday and Tuesday). Boo. Whatever. Zzzz.

  • How many fish fingers are too many? My personal limit is 8 to 10, but I am open to suggestions from the assembled audience. 8-10 provides plenty to be enjoyed with a variety of sauces, but doesn't weigh heavily on the stomach.

    • Been awhile since I’ve had fish sticks, I think I used to eat somewhere between 10-15 of them depending on size.

      Tomato sauce or tartare sauce works for me.

  • Hectic meeting done... I was told just as the meeting started that it was going to be cut from 2 hours down to 1 because my supervisor needed to meet another student. Given how little of an f I've been giving about this project, I can't be too mad that he's prioritising people with actual research, but it still stings a bit to be reminded how low on the totem pole I am when most of this research experience has been an opportunity for my brain to ramp up the usual "you are not as smart as you thought you were lol" messaging. That's on me though heh.

    Anyway, I get a second opportunity to chat to him tomorrow which is probably better given that I wrote all that stuff yesterday but didn't create the main figures that we'd actually need to focus on... (and which I can create today).

    After all this is done I'm tempted to go volunteer in a plant nursery and tune out the world for a good month...

    e: current distraction is following the votes in Goldstein. Tim Wilson's lead is narrowing! From 500-something down to 300 in a few days. Maybe those postal votes aren't as easy to predict as before. Still don't think Zoe will win but it won't be a decisive victory for Tim either.

    Also following that super thin margin in Bradfield (NSW).

  • That second coffee is reeeeee-heeeeelly making life difficult for me now... nearly 4 am and I'm still going woohoo....

    On the other hand, I've got a VERY fleshed out methods section with five tables and so many sections, and a lot of help from ChatGPT turning dot points into better-structured text.

    I really ought to stop now dammit.

  • The modem has arrived, so I should be able to set up the internet and security cameras tomorrow.

    Today I will pack lots of stuff in the van so I can go up early tomorrow. I want to get some cleaning done, probably mopping the floors, cleaning out the dirt in the door channels and the outside of the windows at a minimum. Plus a quick vacuum of the carpeted areas. If I can get a few more things assembled as well it would be good - I might leave the bedside tables until last, given I can use the box they are in temporarily.

    Edit: even better, there is 4G backup in the modem, so I've been able to start the camera settup today and set up the new wireless passwords etc.
