> Hi all, > > I realize I haven't sorted this community yet, but I am cutting back my Monsteras this weekend and have a bunch of nodes (some with leaves) to give away. Happy to trade or send out to those who are just starting (with some goodies) for shipping and handling. > > Peace.
Will sort out the bells and whistles on there the next few days, but try to format posts similarly. :)

- UV light in bedroom
I have some UV plant lights by my desk that are on often. Recently I started to worry if they are increasing my risk of skin cancer. Is that totally far out or should I try to point them away from where I work ?
- My one year old zebra plant
I found this what I assume to be tradescantia zebrina last winter as a little stem with three leaves laying on the ground. It has turned into one of my favorite plants over the last year!
- New Additions!
Went to a plant show yesterday with no intention to buy. I've had a h. gunung gading (bottom) on my list for so long though and the price was right so here we are... Also there was a carnivorous table so I picked up a sundew (top) to go with my pings that I had at home.
- Final update on my pineapple plant journey. Time to eat this little guy and replant the top to do it all over again hopefully!
I hope I can keep the cycle going with this pineapple lineage for many generations to come.
- Hoya gracilis has a subtle perfume but is a pretty and prolific bloomer.
I had to leave this in the same spot for a year and a half before it bloomed. I think Hoya are just homebodies.
- I got tired of killing my cactus so now I plant mint
yes, I used the peanut butter pot, support the extreme cheapskates.
- Monstera Help ๐ฅบ
I just noticed this, what should I do? Sorry for the vague question but I can't find any good articles on what this is.
Everything I find starts the same way "top 8 reasons for brown leaves". Then says too much water, not enough water, too much light not enough light too much fertilizer not enough, wrong kind of fertilizer and so on and so on. That isn't helpful! Do I just have to guess? Why is all plant knowledge basically voodoo?
I'm tempted to take a cutting so I have a spare to try again if it all goes wrong, but the plant only has 5 leaves, so I'm stressing out.
- Update on my plant. Unfortunately it might be sick, it has been getting worse ever since I brought it home
Every day I find a few leaves on the ground. I read online that it might be root rot so I have been avoiding giving it water.
I might try to take it out of the pot and remove the bad roots. Does anyone have experience with removing bad roots?
- Last order of the year!
Shipping has closed for the winter so I will not be getting anymore plants this year. Probably for the better... I'll have no space once they all get bigger ๐
Got a couple of my wishlist hoyas (undulata and clemensorium) and some other beautiful plants including some succulents and begonias.

- My daughter made a planter for her cactus
She calls it the soda can planter, and I love it. She made it in tinkercad and I helped her print it with recycled PLA.
EDIT: Not sure why the image didn't upload the first time, I'll try again.
- Inherited African Violets
So Grandma has gone into the old people home and my mom is doing a purge of the house. Mom threw out Grandma's scrapbook of gardening magazine clippings from the 1980s and if Grandma finds out, she's getting disowned.
I have 2 more African violets and my sister who moved to New Mexico has half a dozen newly repotted cacti.

- Plant for very dark bathroom (no window)
hello do you have any ideas or experiences related to plants for a very dark bath room? I am kinda scared to just randomly try a plant and kill it with those circumstances
- Spider Plant gone wild
This is a spider plant I rescued early in the summer. It is going crazy. Do I need to trim off all the babies? Can I let them keep growing?
- What the heck is wrong with my succulent?
I have never seen anything like this? Iโve separated it from the rest of my plants, itโs the only one with this problem! Why is it purple??
- My first propping season!
I've been great at killing every plant I own within a few months. So guess my surprise when the golden Pothos I bought in March actually survived long enough to be propped and repotted!!!
I also bought a small (but very overgrown) Marble Queen Pothos a few weeks ago that has been doing okay! Not much growth, but also not dying yet! whoop whoop!
...aaand I may or may not have impulse bought a Large Form Monstera Deliciosa Cutting yesterday. Let's see how that goes lol
- What is happening to this plant?
Got this plant little over 2months ago, and some ofnthe leaves have started to dry out(?) or so it looks like at least. Is this a sign of too little watering? Have tried to keep water consistant, but slightly unsure what is happening.
Any tips appriciated!
- Sad plant giving up on life - a call for help
Dear houseplant community,
Like the beginning of any good letter, I should probably have written you sooner.
Anyway, a friend of mine had this beautiful plant that she neglected for months, completely drying it out. At the end there were just a few leaves hanging half a meter from the plant itself, completely dried out.
I cut off a piece, gave it roots, potted it, and it went wild! Explosive growth, every new leaf bigger than the last. It was unlike anything I've ever seen.
A few months later, it had had enough. Leaves started curling up and withering. Growth halted. I thought maybe I had forgotten to give it water, but that wasn't it. Moving it to a sunnier spot didn't help either. Now it's almost completely dead, and I miss what we once had.
So, a couple of questions:
- Does anyone have any idea what went wrong? Did I water it too much? Too little?
- What can I do? Can it be saved? Does it need plant nutrition? A bigger pot? I'm afraid of doing anything, as it seems so fragile one bad move would surely be the end of it.
Thank you so much in advance!
Yours truly, Aa

- Impulse buy: Philodendron melanochrysum
Is the melanochrysum still considered rare? I've been out of the houseplant loop for several months, really mainly since leaving Reddit and r/houseplants. I've acquired all plants on my wishlist but always loved the pics of the melanochrysum that others posted. I wanted one but didn't think I would ever get my hands on one, so never considered it.
Then I started working at this garden center and they had them marked down at half off. First impulse buy in a while.
- Cherimoya Fruit!
I finally managed to pollinate my cherimoya!
For the uninitiated: Pollinating cherimoyas is a bit tricky, because their flowers only bloom for a single day. During this time, they are initially female and can absorb pollen, but only turn male in the evening to harvest pollen from.
To pollinate them successfully, you have to sacrifice at least one flower, take its pollen and hope that the next flower opens before the pollen is no longer viable.
- What am I doing wrong? [details in description]
TLDR: Citrus keeps turning black and oozing resin. But I can't find the problem. I thought it must be root rot, but they look perfectly healthy:
Long version: Because my first and second citrus trees fell victim to root rot, I started using a very airy substrate made of pine bark, perlite and some humus/worm castings in a 5:1:1 ratio for all my plants (figs, pineapple, cherimoya, monstera, etc.) with little adjustment. You may recognize this as 'aroid mix'. But it works surprisingly well in my indoor space with a west-facing window and terracotta planters (and my tendency to overwater).
But I can't wrap my head around citrus.
It always starts with rapid growth, followed by very suddenly dropping and crisping leaves, black stems and finally death.
I thought I must be root rot again, which I need to mind during winter. But today, when I dumped my fifth (!) tree, I found only perfectly healthy roots and nice smelling substrate.
I think it must be a pathogenโฆ but what? I am at a loss. I keep killing my citrus trees and I don't know why. :'(
EDIT: replaced "5:1:1 mix" with "5:1:1 ratio" for clearification.
