  • Had to sort of have 'the talk' with mum last night about hanging up the car keys. Had it before and we agreed only short trips (<2km) in daylight and less regular. Now after this it's completely not safe for everyone. Feels bad, basically taking independence. She brought it up saying in a few days she'll be able to get behind the wheel again so in that sense it wasn't a sit her down and tell her something out of the blue thing.

    I think one of harder things here is hearing her say 'in a few days' about a lot of things but the reality is things have changed permanently. In not saying anything when she says that I am giving false hope which I'm not sure is good or bad.

    • ha ha, was thinking the same thing about my mil#1, she's 87 and convinced she can and should drive

      i don't really care if she bingles, etc, but i do worry she might hurt someone else

    • It’s such a difficult situation to be in, and I really sympathise. It must be so hard for your mum dealing with these changes, and for you trying to help her.

      Can you subtly suggest the how good Uber (or whatever car system that might work) is? No parking issues, cheaper overall costs, etc.

      I remember how hard it was to get my mum to stop driving, and she wasn’t great at it even before age-related decline.

    I cleaned up too well the other day and packed away something I needed.

    Tore the place down last night to no luck so I’ve had to go back to buy it again.

    • Aw man, I hate that feeling. And then when you find the thing later you're like, that's money and time I could've saved. Hopefully it's one of those things where having two of the item is not a waste. There's some random shit I found while packing that I never used and that is coming on handy at my current place...

        I’m going to make myself a real coffee today with all the frothing to make myself feel better.

  • Christmas "tree"...

    • Also if anyone is westside and wants Christmas decorations I realised I have a giant (like one of those big plastic tubs full) box of purple/gold ornaments in the storage box. My ex must have randomly given them back and they somehow have missed the multiple declutters. I am never gonna have a tree that big again. Will take them to salvos on there weekend but thought I would check here first. DM me if you want them and can pick them up

  • Tree is up. Squashed into a new spot in the living room because while it fit fine last year's spot, we don't spend time there as a family.

    First advent calendar drawers are about to be loaded. If not for four days of possible showers on the forecast, it'd almost feel like Christmas.

  • I put my Christmas cross stitch up on the wall, I'm calling decorating done.

      • Cross stitch is fairly simple, it is mostly a matter of persistance. You follow someone else's pattern which is the real talent.

        I actually have another Christmas cross stitch too, but I ignore the fact that it is supposed to be a Christmas design and it is up all year - it is much larger, and a lot of the design is beaded as well.

  • Ok. I am home and caffeinated and fed.

    Step 1 clean and put away clothes Step 2 some work bits to set up the week Step 3 dig out some Christmas decorations and spruce the place up

    Need to do some food in there for the week... Might so a batch of black bean chilli. I have some wraps and I could do some rice or maybe potato mash. That should deal with lunches for a few days. I think I am going to need too wfo most of this week...

    • Warm weeks like this, I make giant bowls of potato salad or pasta salad if I can be stuffed. Sometimes it's just boiled eggs and a variety of fruits, vegetables and cold meats.

      • Yeah I have been doing sushi lately too. Big batch of sushi rice and prechop veg and it's about the same effort as making a sandwich.

        But yeah... haven't done a big pasta salad since last summer. Good idea. Ta

  • The people over the back fence don't appear to have their children this morning. We will have left by August!

      • It's from his birth year, but I'd have thought it would have turned up at some point later. Is there anyone who has't seen Top Gun, or at least 3/4 knows it from memes?
