The Netflix thing is very common in the global south, at least from my experience. People see it as a culturally imperialistic tool of the US, which it is. They then go a step further and say it’s to brainwash the masses with lgbt and wokeism
Case in point, visiting the Chinese Three Body Problem forums on Baidu Tieba, Bilibili and Douban forum really gave me brain damage. Everyone is mad that the Netflix version of Luo Ji is being played by a black guy, all kinds of derogatory jokes about the diversity casting, and somehow that all the Asian cast happen to be playing the antagonists in the story, so it’s “American racism against Chinese”. It’s really no different from any of the chud subreddits.
The English Three Body Problem subreddit is actually 100 times better than the Chinese forums in terms of vibes lol.

This is a common cracker tactic when it comes to "adapting" Asian stories. They replace Asian characters with other minorities so that if Asian people complain they can be dismissed as being racist. If Chinese forum users are making racist jokes about black people then that's obviously not okay, but complaining about an Asian story being plastered over as if all minorities are fungible is valid imo.
Taking a step back, this is a manifestation of the divide and conquer strategy crackers often apply to other groups, privilege one over the other to foster acrimony and hate so that other groups can't unite to dismantle white supremacy. It cuts the other way with Asians in the West being the "model minority" until recently, but in entertainment crackers definitely favor African Americans over Asians.

That is in fact, racist. Hollywood has a long history of recasting Asian people as white but only if it's for a main character role. They'll so far as make biopics of Asian dudes but change him into a white guy like the movie about the MIT cardcounter. If they're the villian they'll still be Asian. (see avatar movie)
Also you know in America, Asian people are in fact the minority. Diversity casting is when you replace members of the minority group with members of the majority group. The more of the majority group there are the more diverse it is.

Going off a tangent but the bad thing about western "diversity casting" is that it always has caucasoids in it and they can be any number of roles while anyone who isn't pale as a bedsheet is restricted/typecast. Treating caucasoids as full human beings while "the rest" are just stereotypes. (Why I stopped giving a shit about western media unless I make a rare exception)
In an ideal world diversity casting would have zero white people in it (unless they're an unsympathetic, unappealing or disgusting villain, that would be acceptable)

Most sources I can find on the PFLP describe it as secular, but am I correct to assume that it would have many Muslims amongst its ranks due to the mostly Muslim demographics of Palestine?

They're secular yeah, but they still even have some sheikhs as their members.
Their founder was a Palestinian Christian, pretty sure they recruit from all ethno-religious backgrounds but being as most Palestinians are Sunni Muslim their membership is probably predominantly Muslim.

Did the Afghan revolution reset the progress for Arab/Islamic socialism? The US went hard shilling for Islamic fundamentalism in order to combat the country, and many of the Christian politicians would even invoke God when speaking to Muslims as if they shared the same religion lol. Even then, the revolution was just horrendous and the leader was likely a CIA plant. All of that culminated in the Soviet invasion which essentially cemented socialism as an occupier’s ideology for a lot of Arabs and Muslims, even if they’re sympathetic to Russia today.
Most of the Muslims I know in the US claim to be devout and as a result, still largely conservative, even the young ones. Practically every other practicing religious person I know has some kind of exception for even the strictest rules. But for Muslims it’s largely conservative. The only exceptions are usually female Muslims and male Muslims who casually observe. It’s pretty interesting to see, and also a bit funny because the Muslim guys at my school usually do not engage with any of the Muslim girls outside of required academic work, but they’ll engage with non Muslim girls

Generally if you're a strict observer of your religion that's gonna come with some conservatism. Most non casual Christians, jews etc tend to be pretty conservative cause being a strict follower of something over 1000 years old isn't going to lead to progressivism. It's hardly unique. If it's something you're observing at your school then it's probably your sampling group. I live in a town with 3 universities and the people who can afford to be sent abroad to college also tend to come from wealthy families who have maintained there wealth or gained it sometimes throughout all of this turmoil. It's a class thing, not a religion thing. Rich people are more conservative.
I've made it a point before, but marxism being perceived as anti-religion or an idelogy that persecutes religious observance is a legitimate barrier to a lot of otherwise very reachable people. Like, I know quite a lot of very religious people, and none of them will even contemplate anything like organizing with the left, because they believe that if the left comes into power, their mosque will get shut down and they will be thrown in jail. They will agree with anything I say about the nature of imperialism, liberalism being hollow, the concept of human rights being mostly western mental masturbation, as well as other ML critiques, but they still bristle like an animal the second you mention anything about AES, or socialism in general.
