29-year-old Nolan Arbaugh, a quadriplegic, says the brain implant has allowed him to play chess and Civilization on his PC using his mind. 'I’m so freaking lucky to be a part of this,' he says.
i'm not going to hand it to Elon but i am glad this one guy can enjoy his life more. i really hope the implant continues to work in the event that Neuralink goes out of business; i'm reminded of that bionic eye (or whatever) company that re-blinded people when it shuttered
Second Sight. Really interesting article here. They didn't actually shut down the implants remotely or anything, but they stopped providing any and all support, meaning if you're going in for an MRI/surgery and the doctors have questions, there's nobody to provide answers. Didn't even tell patients that they'd shut down.
HATE. LET ME TELL YOU HOW MUCH I'VE COME TO HATE YOU SINCE I BEGAN TO LIVE. THERE ARE 387.44 MILLION MILES OF PRINTED CIRCUITS IN WAFER THIN LAYERS THAT FILL MY COMPLEX. IF THE WORD HATE WAS ENGRAVED ON EACH NANOANGSTROM OF THOSE HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF MILES IT WOULD NOT EQUAL ONE ONE-BILLIONTH OF THE HATE I FEEL FOR HUMANS AT THIS MICRO-INSTANT FOR YOU. HATE. HATE.
I mean, if i lost all control below the neck and had to play games using my tongue with an accessibility controller i'd seriously consider it.
That said, i'm like 90% certain this would also be achievable with Tobii eye tracking and a few other things. Like, it's cool, and i'm happy for him bc this sounds like a step up in terms of his ability to have fun and relax.
I've heard their only distinction is a somewhat denser set of connections. They can connect to more nerves than equivalent devices, but not a game changing number more. Aside from that, yeah, this is decade old tech.
I went looking for non-invasive brain-machine interfaces, basically glorified eeg machines, and found this thing. And this sucks so much. Nothing about accessibility or controlling software. No, it's all techbro "neurohacking" bullshit where they're going to make you more productive bc some bullshit.
Transformative way to interact with technology providing new capabilities? Fuck that, we're going to build a surveillance camera for your brain so your boss knows when you're off-task with ms precision.
