I openly resent 2010s nostalgia

Of all the things young people could have latched onto, it's the decade of the great recession almost no place on earth really recovered from, a head bozo in the US that's somehow popular but turned the world into his personal drone playground, while the empire continued as it did.

It was the decade every social movement failed in, and mostly retreated back to moralistic forms of liberalism, just as every equally moralistic right wing reaction grew exponentially, leading to the current issues.

It was the decade climate change was decided to be fixed through a bunch of treaties worth less than the paper they were written on.

It was the decade of the start of the return of the malaise of collapsing empires. Poverty, hunger, climate change caused disasters. War had not went away, but resistance to it did.

Plus, pop culture (the thing most of the nostalgia is directed to - the eternal "It's Christmas ~~1996~~ 2013 and my parents got me ~~a Nintendo 64~~ the new Call of Duty" of obnoxious liberals) sucked ass.

every once and a while, I meet someone that seems like they haven't experienced a single day since 2012 and were completely unaffected by the preceding recession and I get really angry at them even when they haven't done anything to me

Did you read If We Burn? It was a great retrospective on the 2010s protest movements and how they failed, were coopted, or turned into tragedies. Turns out that leaderless horizonslism doesn't work - if you don't pick your leaders they will pick themselves.

Not to take away from your main point, but the 07-08 recession was more of a western phenomena. China was relatively insulated from it along with plenty of other countries.

The 2010s had very few things going for it culturally. Some good video games, a good movie here and there. Frutiger Aero? That was kinda cool right? But overall? The 2010s sucked. I was an angsty teen in most of the 2010s, and so naturally I have a bias against that time period. I hated the fashion choices, the uggs, the white woman fallcore aesthetic, curly moustaches, gross. The pop music? Wack. Awful. Mumford and sons were a poison on this earth. Imagine dragon? Eeessshhh. It's like the one decade the Mormons ate good in lol.

I have some personal reason to be nostalgic for the early 2010s. Besides those, the main thing I liked about that time was that not everyone owned a smartphone yet, so not every single thing was behind a smartphone app. The pop culture of that time isn't something I ever really go back to. Just as an example, Iron Man 2 came out in 2010 and it's an absolutely awful time capsule of Obama-era liberalism.

  Mid-20's in 2010 comrade. I had to deliver pizza after graduating college, living at home with my parents. They charged me rent (kind of insane), but I managed to get a PS3 at a close-out sale from Circuit City. Even if the generation was cursed by Brown graphics, there were some very fun games -- most of all M A G, which still hasn't been topped for a military shooter.
  Still, it's not like it was a great time, but I'm starting to realize there were never great times in my life and that's the way forwards.

I see this with folk punk. It feels weird, but that genre was sort of a flash in the pan for the mainstream. Seeing someone geek out over a cassette they found in 2010 or so is kinda wild, if a bit understandable.
- I think folk punk had it's moment because it was one of the last ways to hang on to an analog world. People definitely want that feeling again, but the time has passed and it just feels wrong now.
  
  Honestly, I enjoy listening to folk and folk punk, but I would like to see more modern music in this genre with a communist focus instead of some anti-capitalist vibes music. It's partly why I am motivated to learn the acoustic guitar so I can do some performances for protests/rallies and perhaps make some original communist folk music that express truth in the material conditions today and the reality we face. Many modern folk artists are just anti-authoritarian and idealist, and they sing Amerikkka bad, Putin bad, North Korea bad, killing bad, people and love good, etc. without any understanding in theory and historical materialism.

I don't have much nostalgia for 2010s mostly due to my own personal struggles at the time but looking back at slops aired on spike TV for example, it's really hard to look at any of those shows more than "I can't believe the amount of trashy shit that was aired" than having any nostalgia for it.

60's, 70's, 80's, 90's, early 2000's, all had a vibe, it wasn't until you hit like 2009 did things start to become grey and dull, the "minimalist" aesthetic

I cherish that point in my life, even as the safety bolts were coming loose in the world

So what about the 2010s are the youth nostalgic for? I don't spend a lot of time around older children and there isn't really anything that comes to mind for me that you'd be nostalgic for.
- MTV used to have a niche/retro game review section and music videos. That was the best part for me in late 2000s-2010s
- Flimsy reason but the latter half of the 2010s looks better in retrospect compared to the world after 2020.
- The particular trend that prompted this rant is me reading posts about why the 2010s nostalgia in pop music - the return of electropop etc., and it being a bunch of annoying redditors praising Obama etc.

  All I can remember from the 10s music wise is Maroon 5, Imagine Dragons, Katie Perry and dubstep.
