  • I don't know anyone besides myself that even uses social media IRL.

    • ...what? Nobody you know IRL uses Facebook, Linkedin, Insragram, Bluesky, Twitter, or That Google Thing?

How is that possible? I don't think I could find anyone here in Finland who could say what you're saying. Need more data about this case of yours!

      • I don't even know how it's possible myself. Everyone around here just seems like a massive Luddite. Most stores around here only barely got the ability to use tap and pay within the last 3 years. It's like a technological black hole, despite being a 2 hour drive away from silicon valley.

The one good thing is that I have yet to encounter anywhere that makes me scan a QR code to see their menu.

  • Nah. My brother, wife, my two best friends and one co-worker are the only ones who even know it exists, and that's because they know I use it as an alternative to reddit since the API fiasco. It's honestly pretty obscure, but I like it that way. I'd love to see larger niche communities, especially since r/stalker was one of the only places I could actively talk about my favorite game series, but Lemmy has been a far better experience overall.

  • My husband recently rediscovered Lenny again and a friend joined. They both find it hard to stay since it's pretty quiet and don't have many active niches.

  • I have a few friends that are fed up with Microsoft and Google and other big tech. We've been degoogling and trying Linux together (errr, they have - I'm the grizzled Linux junkie they all reached out to for advice).

Most of them have tried all the different fediverse products and they've found homes here and there.

Some of them have graduated into self-hosting even. I find this bit wonderful, if it's unfortunate how far the industry had to rot before they considered the move.

  • I know one guy, but I know him from a IRC (now Matric) channel, but we are offline friends too and visited each other often.
