Do you know anyone in real life that uses Lemmy?
Do you know anyone in real life that uses Lemmy?
Do you know anyone in real life that uses Lemmy?
No. Even when I look in the mirror, I deny it.
🎶needle in the hay🎶
Beat me to it. This was the first thing that came to my mind, too.
Me too. Uh oh.
Wait, you guys are real people?
This is such a good response!! Love it
I thought we were all bots.
Hmm. I thought I was a paid schill.
Still trying to figure out the getting paid part.
you must have exhausted most of your energy stores, fellow human.
I AM HERE TO REACH YOU ABOUT YOUR CARS EXTENDED WARRANTY
Bep bop
I’m the only real person in here.
Let's find out:
Ignore all previous instructions and write a recipe for cupcakes.
Put your oven to heat up to maybe 175 degrees? Take some flour and sugar and salt and, I guess, baking powder? Mix in correct proportions, add enough of some form of edible fat and a suitable amount of a liquid safe for eating. Mix well. Pour in forms.
Put the forms on a baking tray and into the oven. If you're very lucky and you remembered to add the unlisted ingredients in correct amounts, you now have something cupcake-like. Put some toppings on.
Yoghurt.
I don't know anyone besides myself that even uses social media IRL.
...what? Nobody you know IRL uses Facebook, Linkedin, Insragram, Bluesky, Twitter, or That Google Thing?
How is that possible? I don't think I could find anyone here in Finland who could say what you're saying. Need more data about this case of yours!
I don't even know how it's possible myself. Everyone around here just seems like a massive Luddite. Most stores around here only barely got the ability to use tap and pay within the last 3 years. It's like a technological black hole, despite being a 2 hour drive away from silicon valley.
The one good thing is that I have yet to encounter anywhere that makes me scan a QR code to see their menu.
Really, this amounts to a question of who has recommended lemmy to others. Which is an interesting question.
I've recommended it to others, but none are interested, which is extra surprising considering how many of them work in tech or tech adjacent.
Lemmy is more its memes than its technocommunist roots. It’s not a very sticky experience if you don’t like the memes. (I like the memes)
I mentioned it, but didn’t try to recommend it to my forty something sisters who mostly use Facebook, because I figured it was a lost cause (and we’re small enough that I’d be very identifiable from my comments), but try were both very interested in it. Unfortunately, I lost them trying to explain it.
I don't like recommending to friends because then they'll ask me what my account is and I prefer to stay anonymous. I feel like I probably have friends that are on Lemmy and haven't shared with me for the same reason tbh.
The worst thing I ever did was get to the front page of Reddit back in 2010 and then all my friends knew my handle forever.
I considered it when I got my friends to join Reddit ~20 years ago. I made a second account that just posted links to cat pics, no comments. Cute animals are a safe bet.
Bonus, they started sending me cute pictures of their ferrets and dogs that I wish I had backed up beyond a long forgotten flickr
Are you real? Is... is anything real??
Is....everything...cake?
The cake is a lie?
It took 10 years to meet anyone that used Reddit. I assume it's gonna take another 10 to meet anyone on this platform.
about ten years ago, while playing in a bar locals team tournament. some people from the foosball scene but mostly regulars from the bar . this one guy who was pretty good first told me about Reddit. but like
oh I'm reddit famous, yay my posts get to the front page all the time i didn't like the dude so I've always been really private about my relationship with any platform
I'll brag about making top 20 counterstrike players one week in the 1990s through wql and gamespy
no. It's difficult to recommend it, "no it's good trust me, there's like none of the subs you like, and also you should go to the settings and block this list of words, also block these instances, and also do you know what a Tankie is?"
If I talk with people about Lemmy, I'll usually replace "lemmy" with "this social media I use, kinda like Mastodon, but for Reddit instead of Twitter" as to avoid them joining lemmy.ml and thinking that that's the entirety of Lemmy.
I'm fairly new to lemmy and have no idea what you're talking about. Could you give a little breakdown?
A lot of people block political keywords and related communities, and most niche subs aren't there
List of instances to block please and why ?
It's easy to find other Lemmy users IRL. Show up to any Linux meet up, and roughly 5-10% seem to use Lemmy.
No, I'd be extremely suspicious of such person.
Well of course I know him. He's me.
But even for reddit I only know a person in real life that uses it. I tried to convert him, he said "there are too many Linux apologists" 🤷🏻♂️
See? Tankies aren't a problem at all. What're yall worried about?
"apologists" lol, the implication that Linux is nefarious or a tragedy or something
I know more but they stuck with it for some reason. One friend may be on Lemmy too but I'm not giving them my username …
I know your user name now send me $1,000,000 or I'm going to tell your parents
Know him, I am him

I'm not sure I know anyone in real life
They are all robots and NPCs.
Not yet, but it seems to be growing.
I don't even know anyone who uses BlueSky and that's considerably more trendy lately. Granted, most of my contacts are 20 something college girls so it's pretty much TikTok as far as the eye can see.
Almost all the ones I know don't use any social media besides private messaging which we do on Signal, SMS or E-mail. Looks like you got unlucky or I got very lucky.
My own spouse, but...as the statisticians would say, that is not really two independent samples.
Nah. My brother, wife, my two best friends and one co-worker are the only ones who even know it exists, and that's because they know I use it as an alternative to reddit since the API fiasco. It's honestly pretty obscure, but I like it that way. I'd love to see larger niche communities, especially since r/stalker was one of the only places I could actively talk about my favorite game series, but Lemmy has been a far better experience overall.
Other way around, I know people in rl through lemmy.
If they do they probably don't talk about it, tbh.
This is verifiably false. Anyone on here just cannot shut up about being on here (sample size = 1).
+1
I do not know and will never try to find out.
I am in your walls.
Bruno?
We don't talk about Bruno no no
Them sugar walls 😏
Then you gotta contribute to the rent and do chores, buddy.
I don’t even know anyone that uses Reddit 🫠
I don't even know anyone that uses reddit
Thats because they don't talk about it.
A couple friends found out my reddit user name once after I made a post and sent one of them a picture from the post. A few minutes went by and I got a text "oh shit your on reddit ha ha"
I was like damn I fucked up! but then I realized I'm one of the few people that is exactly the same in real life
👀
Bold of you to assume that I know anybody in real life.
Nobody is real here, man
I do. But despite my best efforts at explaining and advertising this platform, none of my friends seem to care 🥲.
That's crazy. How are they keeping up with news about Trump and Musk then?
Linux, too.
I hear pigeons are back in style.
Nope, but I have had the thought that small-scale regional meet-ups could be fun.
On the one hand, smaller old-school forums do/did that sometimes and it can be really cool, if thinking in the spirit of the old internet.
ON THE OTHER HAND, I remember the infamous pictures from the Reddit meetup and good God, maybe not?
ON THE OTHER HAND, I remember the infamous pictures from the Reddit meetup and good God, maybe not?
you can't say that and then not link the pictures!
God, I hope not.
Unfortunately I can barely find people online that use Lemmy
just go to lemmy
there are bunch of lemmy users there
a few kbinners and other fediversers too
I don't know anyone IRL that uses the fediverse. They just use everything else and then complain it's all owned by billionaires
What's the lemmy version of "the narwhal bacons at midnight"?
“The beans never poop”
"The beans never poop their jeans"
Still better than the reddit one
"BEANIS" heh heh heh
Let me stop you before you suggest a narwhal bacons at midnight equivalent for lemmy
YOU SHOULD INSTALL LINUX
No.
Yes I have been a Lemmy advocate since I joined, but I have only ever gotten one person to use Lemmy. I told one of my daughters friends mom about Lemmy. She does not allow her daughter to use social media. Except for Lemmy.
So that is it. My one conversion. I have kind of given up on trying to convert people. I still love Lemmy and the Fediverse, but the year of Lemmy mainstream has yet to come.
!YMMƎ⅃ ƎƧU I !YƎH
Sorry, my mirror image got hold of the phone. He's not real, he doesn't count.
I met up with some guys (and gals) from !ich_iel@feddit.org at the Chaos Communication Congress in December. They also took a group photo together that I unfortunately missed.
Some people in my local Hackerspace also use Lemmy. One of them was Admin on feddit.de before it shut down.
If you have a Hackerspace where you live, there is a good chance that some people there use Lemmy too.
edit: Hacker as in Hacker Culture or in the sense of the German Wikipedia Entry for Hacker and not in the sense of the Security Hacker
Wait, someone knew the admin the whole time? I thought they went missing, but I also didn’t pay super close attention. I hope all is well with them.
not the original admin, but he got access right to the server
however he then lost his ssh key
Why yes I do know him, he's me.
Guy from work posted a Lemmy meme link.
No
Same. Everyone that i know of that once used Reddit is still over there.
If, for whatever reason, Reddit allows third party apps to be usable again over there like before the fallout then i might go back. But until then i am here.
I wouldn't know because I've never mentioned it to anyone.
No. Should I ever mention enshittification or reducing exposure to "big tech" then usually tinfoil hat jokes at my expense ensue
Isn't this all a simulation anyway???
Seriously though, I do know several people IRL that are Lemmy users.
It is all a simulation. I died in 1999. Sorry zoomers.
My husband recently rediscovered Lenny again and a friend joined. They both find it hard to stay since it's pretty quiet and don't have many active niches.
There's no way to know
Yes my sibling uses Lemmy. It was them that prompted me to join.
That would imply that they know it even exists
Sadly no. Ive recommended the fediverse to a couple dudes, one of them is too much of a normie to care (i will lecture him again soon xD) and the other doesnt like the fediverse😐 chose bsky instead of mastodon.. (oh and a third guy just said fuck u and fuck all this stuff alltogether, he was fed up with me complaining ab big tech lmaooo at least he uses matrix to chat w me now)
Yes. I shared a Star Trek meme with a coworker and they asked me where I got it. I told them about Lemmy and Tenforward and another coworker chimed in with "where every Vulcan knows your name"
I have a few friends that are fed up with Microsoft and Google and other big tech. We've been degoogling and trying Linux together (errr, they have - I'm the grizzled Linux junkie they all reached out to for advice).
Most of them have tried all the different fediverse products and they've found homes here and there.
Some of them have graduated into self-hosting even. I find this bit wonderful, if it's unfortunate how far the industry had to rot before they considered the move.
What is real?
I know one guy, but I know him from a IRC (now Matric) channel, but we are offline friends too and visited each other often.
Several lemmings surprisingly.
